The Facts and Figures Behind Recycling
We all know that recycling is good for the environment, and we are all aware that we need to do a lot more of it. But do you know the facts about recycling? Here are the facts related to recycling and why it is so important:
Did You Know That…
·         Recycling a tin saves enough energy to power a television for 3 hours
·         A recycled glass bottle would power a laptop for 25 minutes
·         A single recycled plastic bottle can power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours
·         On average, 60% of the waste found in non-recycling dustbins is actually recyclable
·         Britain’s largest lake could be filled with rubbish in only 8 months
·         As much as 50% of waste in the average dustbin could be composted
·         80% of a car is recyclable
Some of these figures are absolutely staggering and they really hammer home exactly why the UK must recycle more. For a more in depth approach, let’s now break this down even further and look at each recyclable material and its environmental impact:
Paper
  • New paper creates 73% more air pollution than its recycled counterpart
  • Each year the UK uses 12.5 million tonnes of cardboard
  • The average person reads 38kg of newspapers each year and
  • 24 trees make a single ton of newspaper

Aluminium
·         Of the 24 million tonnes of packaging produced annually in the UK, 51,000 tonnes is used as packaging
·         Every single year, the UK throws away (without recycling) £36,000,000 worth of aluminium
·         If every can in the UK was recycled, we would need 14 million fewer dustbins

Glass
·         The average family uses 500 glass jars annually
·         Glass that is thrown away will never decompose
·         All glass is 100% recyclable and can be used time and time again
·         The UK’s largest gas furnace produces 1 million glass jars per day

Plastic
·         In the UK, we use 15 million bottles per day
·         The average family will throw away 40kg of recyclable plastic each year
·         Plastic takes up to 500 years to decompose.

The facts and numbers behind the recycling campaigns are staggering and they really show how much of our waste is unnecessary. By carefully recycling we can drastically reduce our carbon emissions and easily meet our emission and landfill targets in time for 2020. So spread the word and let’s get those statistics out there.
